The World’s 10 Most Powerful Women In Technology

Forbes Magazine has released this year’s list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women which features 18 technology power women, who are executives in the world’s top technology companies.
This year, technology takes a fourth turn as a category, after it was first introduced in the 2012 Power Women list which featured 15 technology power women. Out of 18 in total in this year’s list, seven tech women made the top 25 list, including Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, YouTube’s Susan Wojcicki, IBM’s Ginni Rometty, HP’s Meg Whitman and Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer.
Here are the world’s 10 most powerful women in technology as profiled by Forbes:

#8 Sheryl Sandberg, 45, COO, Facebook

This former Google executive joined Facebook in 2008 and became the first woman on its board four years later. Sandberg helped the social network scale globally, go public and expand digital revenue. Earlier, the Harvard MBA was a World Bank economist and chief of staff to then-Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.

#9 Susan Wojcicki, 46, CEO, YouTube

In February 2014, Wojcicki moved from her post as consigliere for Google’s ads and commerce (some 90% of revenue) to become CEO of Google-owned YouTube, the world’s largest video platform. In 2006, Wojcicki championed the $1.65 billion acquisition of the video site. YouTube, with more than 1 billion unique visitors a month, is now valued at some $20 billion, with 2014 revenues hitting $4 billion, up 33% from the prior year.

#13 Virginia Rometty, 57, CEO, IBM

More than three years have passed since Rometty took the helm at IBM and it’s been anything but smooth sailing. With 11 consecutive quarters of revenue declines, IBM is sticking to its focus on boosting profit margins and cultivating growth. Under Rometty the technology giant has been shifting its portfolio of businesses. She has led spending programs for data-analysis software and skills, cloud computing and Watson artificial intelligence technology. At the same time IBM has sold businesses that generated billions in sales but lost money or broke even, including its chip-manufacturing operation and a division that made low-end server computers. Rometty joined IBM at age 24 as a systems engineer in 1981 and became the company’s first female CEO in 2012.

#14 Meg Whitman, 58, CEO, HP

The Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman has helmed the $112 billion (revenues) tech company since 2011 and became chairman in 2014. Nearly all of her fortune, though, comes from her decade-long stint as CEO of online auction house eBay, which she helped expand from 30 employees and $5 million in sales to more than 15,000 employees and $8 billion in revenue. A Princeton graduate with a Harvard MBA, Whitman did stints at Hasbro, the Walt Disney Co. and Bain & Co and today sits on the Procter & Gamble board.

#22 Marissa Mayer, 39, CEO, Yahoo, Inc.

Since taking the helm three years ago, Marissa Mayer has upgraded content — including hiring journalists Katie Couric and Matt Bai — and pursued an aggressive acquisition strategy aimed at boosting mobile revenues. But sales growth has remained sluggish, and Mayer has faced pressure from activist investors to cut costs and improve financial performance. In January 2014, Mayer announced plans to spin off Yahoo’s stake in Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba. The move will put the focus back on Yahoo’s core business and Mayer’s ability to turn it around. Much of Mayer’s personal fortune comes from what she accumulated during her 13 years at Google, where she was among its earliest employees. The Yahoo chief’s pay package jumped 69% to $42 million in 2014, making her one of the country’s highest-paid CEOs.

#24 Safra Catz, 53, Co-CEO, Oracle Corporation

One of Larry Ellison’s closest confidants, Safra Catz became co-CEO of his software giant Oracle in September 2014. A 16-year vet of the company, she’s been richly rewarded with stock options and is one of world’s highest-paid female executives, earning nearly $38 million in 2014. The Israeli-born, Boston-raised executive is credited with spearheading its aggressive acquisition strategy. She played a role in closing over 85 acquisitions over the past five years helping to cement Oracle’s dominant position in the world of enterprise technology.

#25 Angela Ahrendts, 54, Senior Vice President, Apple, Inc.

The first woman on Apple CEO Tim Cook’s executive team, Ahrendts started as SVP of retail and online stores at Apple this spring. The gadget giant created the role for her after the former Burberry CEO, credited with turning around the ailing fashion house, grew revenues to more than $3 billion and stocks returned 300%. She’s also the first person responsible for 400+ brick-and-mortar stores as well as online retail efforts. Before Burberry, Ahrendts held leadership positions at Liz Clairborne, Henri Bendel, and Donna Karan International.

#29 Ursula Burns, 56, Chair-CEO, Xerox Corporation

In her five years as CEO, Ursula Burns has managed to make Xerox–once only known for its carbon copies–a viable and profitable company. This past year, Burns helped Xerox generate adjusted earnings per share of $1.09, up from $1.02 in 2012, and post $21.4 billion in full-year revenue. She recently told shareholders that she would continue to sharpen the company’s technology-driven, services-led portfolio. Services represents 57% of the company’s total revenue and is expected to grow to two-thirds by 2017. Burns is a Xerox lifer, beginning her career in 1980 as a summer intern.

#32 Ruth Porat, 57, Chief Financial Officer, Google, Inc.

Longtime power woman on Wall Street, Ruth Porat is moving coasts and taking her talents to Google. After joining Morgan Stanley in 1987, Porat survived the stock market crash untouched. She worked closely with fellow Power Woman Mary Meeker, and moved on to become Morgan Stanley’s vice chair of Investment Banking, global head of the Financial Institutions Group and in 2010, its CFO. During crisis bailouts in 2008, Porat kept a cool head: She helped advise the U.S. Treasury and NY Fed on Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and AIG. Porat leaves the bank after one of its strongest quarters in recent years — trading and wealth management profits swelled 60% in 2015’s Q1 — and is expected to earn at least $70 million during her first two years at Google.

#33 Lucy Peng, 42, CEO, Ant Financial Services, Alibaba Group

Alibaba’s most powerful woman executive heads the group’s fast expanding stand-alone financial services unit, which serves about 615 million users. Ant Financial, formerly known as Small and Micro Financial Services Company, serves mostly small borrowers and depositors who, like most things online, possess extraordinary strength when combined. It is made up of Alipay, China’s version of PayPal and the engine powering the entire Alibaba e-commerce world; Alipay Wallet, a mobile payment service provider, among others. It recently added MYbank, commercial banking for small clients. An IPO for Ant Financial is in the cards, and its value has been estimated between $35 to $40 billion. Peng was a cofounder of Alibaba and continues to serve as its chief people officer.
Other power women in technology include Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and chair of the Emerson Collective (and widow of the late Apple CEO, Steve Jobs); Renee James, President of Intel; Amy Hood, Chief Financial Officer, Microsoft; Mary Meeker, General Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers; Solina Chau, Cofounder, Horizon Ventures;Padmasree Warrior, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer, Cisco Systems; Weili Dai, Cofounder-President, Marvell Technology Group Ltd.; and Jenny Lee, Managing Partner, GGV Capital.

How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks Fast [Health Tip]

Stretch marks are visible lines on the skin surface, with an off-color hue. Stretch marks are mainly found in the abdominal wall, but can also occur over the thighs, upper arms, buttocks and breasts.
Sometimes stretch marks can cover large areas of the body. While pregnancy is the main cause behind stretch marks, other reasons can be sudden gain or loss in weightrapid growthheredity factorsstress and changes in physical conditions.
The skin consists of three main layers: Epidermis (the outer layer), Dermis (the middle layer) and Subcutaneous or Hypodermic (the deepest layer). Stretch marks form in the dermis or middle layer of the skin when the connective tissue is “stretched” beyond the power of its flexibility due to rapid expansion or contraction of the skin.
As skin is stretched, the collagen is weakened and its normal production cycle is interrupted and damaged. This ultimately results in fine scars under the top layer of the skin. Initially the marks look pink or red, but over time a thin, silvery line appears on the skin surface and a stretch mark is born.
Stretch marks appear on the skin surface when someone grows quickly, or puts on weight quickly.
Stretch marks can make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable about your appearance. Fortunately, there are several natural ways to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

1. Castor Oil

Castor oil, which is used in the treatment of a number of skin problems such as wrinkles, age spots, moles, dark spots, fine lines and pimples, can also be used to get rid of stretch marks.
  1. Apply some castor oil to the stretch marks and gently massage the area in circular motions for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Wrap the area with a thin, cotton cloth. Using a hot water bottle or a heating pad, apply some heat to the affected area for at least a half an hour.
  3. Repeat this process daily for a minimum of one month to notice positive results.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is effective in the treatment of many skin problems. Its healing and soothing properties can be used to get rid of stretch marks. There are a couple of ways to apply it.
  • You can directly rub aloe vera gel on the affected skin area, leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse the skin with lukewarm water.
  • Another option is to make a mixture with one-fourth cup of aloe vera gel, oil from 10 vitamin E capsules and oil from five vitamin A capsules. Rub this mixture onto the skin until fully absorbed. Repeat this process daily.

3. Egg Whites

Eggs are a rich source of protein. For stretch marks, you want to use only the egg whites, which contain amino acids and proteins.
  1. Whip the whites of two eggs gently with a fork. Clean the affected skin area with water and then apply a thick layer of egg whites with a makeup brush.
  2. Allow the egg whites to dry completely and then rinse the area with cold water.
  3. Finally apply some olive oil on the skin to keep it moisturized.
  4. Repeat the process daily for at least two weeks and watch for positive results.

4. Lemon Juice

Another simple way to lessen stretch marks is to use lemon juice. Lemon juice is naturally acidic which helps heal and reduce stretch marks, acne, and other scars.
  • Rub fresh lemon juice gently onto the stretch marks using circular motions. Allow the lemon juice to soak into your skin for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.
  • Another option is to mix equal quantities of cucumber juice and lemon juice and apply the mixture on the stretch marks.

5. Sugar

Natural white sugar is one of the best natural remedies to get rid of stretch marks. You can use the sugar to exfoliate your skin.
  1. Mix a tablespoon of raw sugar with some almond oil and a few drops of lemon juice. Mix it well and apply it on the stretch marks and other skin areas.
  2. Gently rub the mixture on the skin for a few minutes every day before taking a shower.
  3. Do this for a month or so and watch your stretch marks become lighter.

6. Potato Juice

Potato juice contains vitamins and minerals that foster growth and restoration of skin cells.
  1. Cut a medium-sized potato into thick slices.
  2. Take one of the potato pieces and rub it gently on the stretch marks for a few minutes. Make sure the starch from the potato covers the affected area.
  3. Allow the potato juice to dry for some time and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

7. Alfalfa

alfalfa leaves
Alfalfa leaves contain eight essential amino acids which are good for overall health of the skin. They are also rich in protein and vitamins E and K, which help nourish the skin.
  1. Mix some alfalfa power with a few drops of chamomile oil to form a smooth paste.
  2. Massage the paste into the affected area two to three times a day.
  3. Repeat this daily for a few weeks and you will notice great improvement.

8. Cocoa Butter

cocoa butter
Cocoa butter is also very beneficial in treating stretch marks. Being an excellent natural moisturizer, it helps nourish your skin and reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
  • You must apply cocoa butter over the affected area at least two times a day for a few months.
  • Another option is to make a mixture using half a cup of cocoa butter, one tablespoon of wheat germ oil, two teaspoons of grated beeswax and one teaspoon each of apricot kernel oil and vitamin E oil. Heat this mixture until the beeswax melts. You can store the mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator and apply it to your stretch marks two to three times a day. This mixture will make your skin more hydrated and smooth.

9. Olive Oil

olive oil
Olive oil contains a lot of nutrients and antioxidants that help improve various skin problems including stretch marks.
  1. Massage slightly warm extra-virgin olive oil into the affected skin area. This will improve the blood circulation and reduce the stretch marks to a great extent.
  2. Leave it for half an hour so that the vitamins A, D and E present in the oil are absorbed by the skin.
You can also mix olive oil with vinegar and water and use it as a night cream. This will keep your skin stay moisturized and also exfoliate the skin.

10. Water

water
Keeping your body well hydrated helps protect the skin from many kinds of problems and also aids in detoxification. It also helps keep the skin supple and restores elasticity.
Try to drink one to two glasses of water several times during a day. Experts say drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day is the best way to keep the body hydrated.
It will also make your skin soft and help maintain its elasticity. It is advisable to avoid coffee, tea or soda though.
These natural remedies can help stretch marks fade, but they may not completely remove them. You can always see your doctor if you are greatly concerned about the appearance of stretch marks on your skin.

History: A Different May 29

FOR the first time in 16 years, May 29 would elicit more emotions than celebrations of a new government, rather another government, assuming office. May 29 is laced with trepidations about what the new government would do. The fears are mainly among those who have run the affairs of Nigeria since the 1999 season of civil administrations.

The immediacy of the fears has been located in indications that the eyes of the government may not wonder beyond a few years in the prosecution of its anti-corruption agenda. The befuddlement over the age of Nigeria’s corruption and the interesting analyses to save a select few from the blows, if they ever come, are another interesting side to the inauguration of the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari. Whatever he does would be a new aspect of our governments; how he does it may bear more importance.

If history was made on May 29, 1999 with the return to civil rule, barely a year in the life of the Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar administration, today is simply historic. For the first in our history, an opposition party won the election at the centre.
Nigeria has managed 16 years of uninterrupted civil administration: two and half times the six-year duration of the post-independence civilian administration, and three times longer than the 1979-post military government of President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari.

The quadrennial routine of swearing in governments also reminds politicians that their time has started “running”. Many of them understand this to mean that they should immediately commence plans for their re-election in 2019 and decide who succeeds them in 2023.

Section 14 2(b) of the Constitution, to which the President, Vice President, Governors and Deputy Governors would swear to today, should be at the centre of the contract between Nigerians and their governments.

It states, “The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.” Do politicians act as if the people’s security and welfare are the purpose of government? Which actions of governments have shown the importance of the people? How do governments relate to the people? Has democracy improved lives of Nigerians? Is the country more democratic today than in 1999?

Our governments have assumed the authoritarian ways of the military. The separation of powers the Constitution intended is a mirage. Local government administrations, the third tier of government, are dead. In most States, Governors are imperial.

They are Executive Governors, a title alien to the Constitution. When they embark on their frequent travels, governance waits until they return. They are accountable to nobody as the State Houses of Assembly are compliant.
Today could mark the beginning of governments where the people count.

Nigeria2015 Transition: History is made as Buhari Takes Over – LIVE UPDATES

Following his victory at the recent Presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari would be sworn in as Nigeria’s president today.
He is taking over from Goodluck Jonathan who has led the country since the death of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010.

His swearing-in makes history as Nigeria’s first switch of power from a ruling party to an opposition.
Mr. Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party has ruled Nigeria since 1999 when the country returned to democracy. Mr. Buhari belongs to the All Progressives Congress.
It will also be Mr. Buhari’s second time ruling Nigeria. He seized power through a military coup in 1983 but was toppled by another coup in 1984.
Our reporters are at the venue of the event and will bring you live updates and details from the venue of the ceremony.

The combined armed forces and police band is currently entertaining the gathering as more dignitaries enter the venue.
We observed that the security and logistics arrangements put in place is one of the best we've seen at government events in recent times.

07.03
The combined band consisting of the Army, Police and others have just walked into the Eagles Square and are setting up their instrument. Military high capacity buses have also brought in Soldiers, Police, Navy and Airforce personnel who will carry out the inauguration parade.
Ushers are also here and are being assigned their assignment posts by planning officials on ground.

Based on the arrangements made by the inauguration committee, all guests attending the event have been directed to park their vehicles at the old parade ground in Area 10,  Garki, the parking lot at Ministry of Justice in Central Area and parking lots of The Transcorp Hilton and Sheraton Hotels.
Buses have been provided to convey the guests from these spots to the Eagles Square.

Immediately after the new President and his Vice are sworn in, guests would be transported to the banquet hall of the State House for a luncheon at 1pm.

07.00
Security is tight in and around the vicinity of the Eagles Square. At the moment there are well over a thousand security personnel involving Soldiers, SSS, Polce, NSCDC, and many others.

Apart from the pavilions in the square, additional canopies and tents were provided both inside the main square and directly behind the grand stand.
Also large screen panels have been erected in and around the square so that guests can follow the event from wherever they are seated.

Photo: Two teen brothers built mobile web browser

The duo of Osine Ikhianosime and Anesi Ikhianosime have rekindled hope in the future of nigeria as they entered their names in the catalogue of application developers when they built a mobile web browser that is already in use globally. Osine Ikhianosime 13, and Anesi Ikhianosime 15 who co-developed ‘Crocodile Browser Lite’ were born of same parents and both are Year nine and 11 students of Greensprings School, Anthony Campus, Lagos. While both brothers write code, Anesi designs the user interface.

Osine and Anesi launched the mobile browser on the Mobango app store before moving to Google Play Store to try and reach a wider audience. As you read this piece, the browser currently has around 100 to 500 downloads and they do not have ads in the app yet. They both began developing an Android web browser, which they named Crocodile Browser Lite, about a year ago out of boredom.

Due to their strong interest  in technology, they decided to create a functional, fast browser for feature and low end phones because, according to them, “We were fed up with Google Chrome.” Osine who told TechCabal in his pitch mail said: ‘’I write the code, my brother designs it.”

Born April 28, 2001, his interest in computers began at age seven. It was also at this age that he and his brother, Anesi Ikhianosime, who was 9 at the time, came up with the idea of starting a company.

Recalling how it started, Osine said, they first named it ‘Doors’ with Microsoft’s Windows, but when they discovered that the name was already in use, they had to change the name to BluDoors. Relating his experience, Osine said: ‘’When we decided to learn to code at age 12 and 14 respectively, I didn’t let my uncle’s belief that it would be a tough feat to achieve deter me.”

On his part, Anesi said: “I learnt to code by myself. I started in 2013, I used sites like Code Academy, Code Avengers and books like ‘Android for Game Development’ and ‘Games for Dummies’,” said Anesi. Meanwhile their mother, Mrs Ngozi Ikhianosime, who is a Mathematics teacher said: “Osine could already use a PC before he could read at age three. It is all he does since he learnt to code.”

The mother who ascribed the success to Greensprings Schools, said students of the school have access to computer and internet facilities, just as personal laptops are made available to each of them at home. “After Anesi is through with his secondary school education, he will attend A levels, after which he will go to MIT in Boston for his first degree, because the university has the facilities he needs to learn.” She said.

Their father Mr Philip Ikhianosime, who is the Head of Management Services and Human Resource Manager at an Insurance Company says the boys developed interest in PC usage very early. He agrees as well, that his children’s school is very instrumental in their continued interest in programming.

Anesi says that he’d like to develop another app that solves real social problems, such as traffic and communication. The brothers are releasing a new version of Crocodile Browser Lite 3.0 this April.

6 Strategies For Surviving In A Job You Hate

How do you survive in a job you hate?

All of us have been there at some point. Out of necessity, you are stuck in a job that is unbearable and as a result, you hate life. This is all-too-common in Nigeria, where workers are often treated as commodities and liabilities, and get almost no real respect.

Unfortunately, under current conditions few have the luxury of simply quitting. According to careeralism.com here are some strategies for coping in a job you just can’t stomach.

Set Goals And Objectives
If there is a bright side to your situation, it’s easier to get a job if you already have one. This means that if you are in a job you hate, you’re in a better position to get something better. Set a goal every week for sending out a number of resumés.

Set Aside Time For Yourself
If you are overscheduled and harassed, you’ll be making a bad thing worse. It is vital to set some time aside each day, particularly before heading into work. It’s also helpful to engage in some activity that brings a smile to your face, whether it’s reading the latest Facebook posts, treating yourself to a favourite snack, or playing your favourite music on the stereo.

Create Diversions
If possible, fill your workspace and/or your day with small diversions. For example, a sales representative who sometimes disliked making ‘cold calls’ to prospective clients brought a joke book to work and made it a point to read something funny before picking up the phone. It made a great deal of difference when talking to people.

Learn New Tricks
If you don’t have the job you want, it may be due to a lack of skills and/or knowledge. Fortunately, this is highly curable. It’s never too late to learn something new that may make you more marketable when a new and better opportunity comes along.

Decompress
Failing to ‘blow off steam’ and letting frustrations build up can be dangerous not only to yourself but to others as well. Engage in fun activities to ease the tension. Or, a leisure walk can go a long way towards depressurising and maintaining a positive outlook.

Keep On Keepin’ On
Anything worth doing at all is worth doing well – even if it’s something you hate. Not only will this give you a sense of accomplishment and pride in yourself, it can also help you down the road should you need a reference.

17-yr-old mentally challeneged girl stabs mother to death, sets body on fire

A mentally challenged 17-year-old girl in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, has allegedly stabbed her mother to death before setting the corpse on fire

A mentally challenged 17-year-old girl in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, has allegedly stabbed her mother to death before setting the corpse on fire, reports MyZimbabwe.com .
The girl was certified mentally unstable when she carried out the act by a psychiatric appointed by the court.
The  court heard that on the day of the murder, the two had quarrelled over a $100 bill that led to the mother beating up her daughter and after the beating, the mother ordered the girl to do more laundry.
That order allegedly angered the teenager who allegedly picked a kitchen knife and stabbed her mother several times on the chest, neck and hands. In order to cover up for the offence, the girl reportedly doused the corpse with paraffin, set the gas off and lit it.The girl then called her friend and informed her about the incident.
According to prosecutor Washington Munyoro, the teenager's friend assisted the police leading to the recovery of the items that were used in the commission of the crime.

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan hosted Nigerian children on Children’s Day celebration

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Wednesday in Abuja hosted Nigerian children to a party to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration.

Mrs Jonathan said the occasion was her last party that would be celebrated with the children and youths in the Presidential Villa.

She also used the occasion to thank them for their respect and love to her during her tenure in office.

However, the first lady enjoined them to be good and obedient children to their parents and remain patriotic to the nation.

Mrs Jonathan expressed confidence in the ability of Nigerian children to excel, adding that the future “is bright” for them.

Some of the children who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said they will miss Mrs Jonathan.

“Mummy Peace is very like-able and generous; she is always smiling and those are some of the things we will miss,” Ms Marissa Okorie said.

On his part, Master Bolaji Oguns, said: “I like the way she dances and plays with us whenever we come to the Villa for parties; I pray the new first lady will be dancing with us and giving us gifts during party.’’ (NAN)

The era of trekking seems not over but when parents decide to abuse their little innocent child all in the name of fame, beats one imagination.

This is exactly what this man and his wife, Michael and Edna Ayibaemi, did when they strapped their three weeks old baby and embarked on a trek from Warri, Delta State, to Otuoke, Bayelsa State, the hometown of President Goodluck Jonathan, in honour of the man for accepting to accept defeat in the March 28, 2015, presidential election so as not to plunge the country into chaos.

According to Michael, he had planned to embark on the trip alone but when his wife who just gave birth barely three weeks earlier insisted on going with him and taking the baby along, he had to let them go with him.

Is this not a brazen way of exposing the baby to danger?

Wickedness Man arrested for sending thugs to throw acid on ex-wife

The police in Lagos State have made a breakthrough in the case of acid attack on a middle aged woman, Bamidele Otakiti, when her ex-husband, Ajayi Olatunbosun, was arrested for allegedly hiring thugs to pour acid on her at her shop on Adejobi Street in the Ajasa Command area of the state.

The couple who divorced in February, 2015, due to irreconcilable differences, had been living separately after the commercial motorcycle rider (Okada) husband accused his wife of serial adultery. It was in the heat of the disagreement that the woman who bore him three children divorced him and he decided to take revenge on her by disfiguring her.

It was gathered that the two-man assailant team hired by Olatunbosun come to Otakiti’s shop on April 21 at about 7.30 pm with a can containing a substance which later tested positive for acid. She was reportedly trying to give them change for some items they had bought when they poured the substance on her.

The attackers allegedly told the woman that they were sent by her ex-husband before they fled the area. She was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital, from where she was referred to the General Hospital, Ile Epo, for intensive care.

Olatunbosun, a resident of Adetoun Street, Abule-Egba, was apprehended after his alleged involvement in the incident, which was reported at the Meiran Police Station.

A police report stated that Olatunbosun, an Ifewara, Osun State indigene, had initially denied the allegation, but later owned up after being thoroughly quizzed.

"He initially denied hiring the thugs. But after a comprehensive interrogation, he confessed, saying the woman had been flaunting her beauty and committing adultery. He is giving us useful information to track the fleeing suspects."

Fuel scarcity: Return of an almost forgotten ordeal

Before the strike by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, was called off on Monday, most bus-stops in Lagos played host to crowds of stranded commuters who were on the receiving end of a biting fuel scarcity that kept commercial and private vehicles off the roads for days. And while the scarcity lasted, it was complaints and lamentation galore among Lagos residents who found it difficult coping with the challenges engendered by the development.

THE AGONY CONTINUES —The crowd and long queues of jerry cans at Capital Oil filling station, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, yesterday. Below right: Stranded commuters’ option B in Lagos, also yesterday. Photos:Lamidi Bamidele with NAN.
At some point, the situation seemingly got out of control as some Lagos workers were compelled by the transport challenges to pass the night in their offices. While there were fewer motor vehicles on the road, many people with jerry cans were frantically moving from one filling station to the other in search of the elusive petrol or diesel to buy.
Some of them who spoke to Vanguard Metro said they wake up as early as 2am to go in search of the products, especially when alerted that a particular filling station had fuel to sell.
Unfortunately as the days went by, the number of filling stations dispensing fuel reduced drastically. The few that had fuel to sell became scenes of confusion as they were usually besieged by motorists and individuals who converged there with their jerry cans to buy the much-sought-after product. Such scenes were witnessed in virtually every part of Lagos.
It also emerged that many of those who bought with jerry cans often did so for commercial purpose as they turn around to resell what they have bought for huge profit. For instance, after buying at the rate of N120 or N150 a litre, they sold 10 litres at N5000, while others sold four litres for N2500.
Just when the situation was about taking a turn for the worst, oil workers, presumably prompted by the decision of Capital Oil boss, Ifeanyi Ubah, to release 13 million litres of petrol into the market, called off their strike. While news was received with joy, the suffering, however, continued. This is because across the country, the situation brought about astronomical increases in fares.
At Ketu area of Lagos, a commercial driver Femi Adegbuyi told VM he went as far as Idi-Iroko in search of the product. And after buying at the rate of N250 per litre, he was compelled to hike fares from N200 to N500 for a trip from Ketu to Oyingbo. The situation was the same among other commercial drivers who also hiked their fares.
For instance, a trip from Ayobo to Iyana- Ipaja which ordinarily costs N150 was increased to between N800 and N1000. Same applied to Sango/Oshodi-bound commercial vehicles which charged as much as N2,500 per trip as against the normal fare of N200. Initially, a trip from Oshodi to Obalende which used to be between N50 and N200 was on Monday morning increased to between N800 and N1000, while a trip from CMS to Victoria Island, which ordinarily costs N150, was increased to N1000.
The situation was the same for Oshodi/Abeokuta-bound vehicles which increased their fare to N2,500 as against N400. Also, the driver of an Ikorodu/Abeokuta-bound car who ordinarily charges N1,000 per trip took advantage of the situation to increase his fare to N4,000. While consumers paid through their noses to source for fuel, it was boom time for black market operators as a litre of fuel sold for between N500 and N700.
A Policeman, DSP Kolawole Olalekan, told VM on phone that he bought 10 litres of fuel at the rate of N3000 to enable him report for duty on Monday. At Yaba axis of Ikorodu Road, 10 litres of petrol sold for N3,500, while 5 litres sold for N1,700. For water transportation, commuters were also made to pay through their noses. For instance, at one of the jetties in Ikorodu, a trip to Victoria Island was pegged at N2,500 as against N700. The same applied to Bayeku to Ajah which attracted a minimum of N500 as against N300.
A commercial boat operator, Mr Riire Emiloju, said he has decided to stop operation until there is solution to the fuel scarcity. Riire said he buys 50 litres PMS at the rate of N20,000. “ I have been operating at a loss and have asked my boys to park the boats until there is solution to the crisis,” he said.

10 Hottest African Artistes Making Global Waves

Africa has continued to churn out exquisite talents in the entertainment industry and music has continued to enjoy wide publicity and popularity. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM writes on 10 top African artistes making wave at home and abroad.

Today, Africans are commanding respect in the field of music, having proven to the world that they too are a force to reckon with. All over the continent, musicians are bringing honour to themselves and their motherland with the quality of their work in the different genres of music.

From Nigeria to South Africa and Ghana through to Senegal, it is irresistible rhythmic tunes and dance steps. The hottest African acts making wave across the globe comprise those that have won lots of accolades with their music and the upcoming ones who have endeared themselves in the hearts of many fans across the world.

According to Mike Sound, Africans are the rave of the moment and they will soon be the best in the world. “We are the African dream and we will soon become the centre of attraction which is what we have started to experience,” he said.

These are some of the top artistes in Africa right now:

AKA, South Africa

This South African hiphop act has shown that Africa and Africans have come a long way in positioning the genre in the music industry. His hardcore style has endeared him not just in Nigeria but all over the world. He was once quoted as saying he feels more at home in Nigeria. He has worked with notable artistes in the music industry across Africa and beyond like Ice Prince, Burna Boy etc. He is well respected right now as his songs are making waves across the globe. The Sony Music/AKA partnership is the key catalyst to change the business and face of music across Africa, especially in the key areas of quality, distribution and content management. AKA is a multi-award winning artist, who recently climbed the iTunes singles chart with ‘Congratulate’ and ‘Run Jozi’, both singles released from the album ‘Levels’.

Asa, Nigeria

This petit lady will never stop impressing and amazing her fans with hit songs. Her latest release has kept lots of people in awe. The multi-instrumentalist has proven that women are also on the verge of exploding in the music scene in Africa and she has kept that by churning out classics that are undoubtedly magnificent.

‘Bed of Stone’ is the third studio album by Nigerian-French recording artiste Asa. It was released on August 25, 2014 on Naive Records. Recorded in the East-Sussex area in the UK, the album was co-written and produced by Blair MacKichan, a British producer that has already worked with Siaand Lily Allen. Bed of Stone is, according to the label company, an album that goes “right to the heart”. It features a folk sound similar to her previous albums Beautiful Imperfection and Asa. Its lead single, Dead Again was released in May, 2014, while a clip video was broadcast the same day. The song is the opening track of the record, it is a piano ballad that deals with a bitter love. The album was acclaimed by critics.

Akon, Senegal

Many would want to say he’s not supposed to be on this list but to clear the air, Akon is one of Africa’s best representatives in the world. Though many see him more like an American artiste, the convict music maestro is sure a good ambassador of Africa. He’s just one of those men who have made Africans proud and also not ashamed of their root.

Wale, Nigeria

Olubowale Victor Akintimehin is signed to Maybach Music Group and associated with Rick Ross, Meek Mill Black Cobain, Mark Ronson, Chrisette Michele J. Cole and Wizkid.

The artistes is a good Mc (Hiphop) and that’s why he’s certainly under one of the best record labels in the world.

In an interview with Flavorwire, Wale said he incorporates elements of go-go in his music. Cyril Cordor of allmusic described go-go as “a more raw, percussion-driven offshoot of disco” that originated in the Washington DC area.

Wale’s early singles that were played primarily in his local metropolitan area heavily sampled 1990s go-go records.

Reviewing Attention Deficit, David Jeffries of allmusic remarked that Wale had a “post-Kanye, post-Lil Wayne, alternative-meets-hardcore style” and commented that Wale’s single “Chillin'”, which featured Lady Gaga “crafts an instant floor-filler out of a sample from the ’70s hit ‘Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye'”.

Sakodie, Ghana

Michael Owusu Addo, known by his stage name Sarkodie, is a Ghanaian hip hop and hiplife recording artiste from Tema. This Ghanaian Mc is crazy when it comes to busting into rhymes and non-stop rapping. If allowed in any song he kills it and makes it look like nothing. The artiste who said his second home is Nigeria has worked with the likes of Ice Prince, Banky W etc.

Sarkodie was born and raised in Tema to his mother Emma Maame Aggrey, a single parent.

Sarkodie often raps in his native language Twi, and is considered a “multifaceted rapper” due to the various musical styles he possesses. Many Ghanaians recognise him as one of the leading hip hop and hiplife artistes in the country. He is considered one of the major proponents of the Azonto genre and dance. In 2010, he received many awards and nominations ranging from “Artist of the Year” to “Album of the Year”.

He won the Best International Act: Africa category at the 2012 BET Awards, and was nominated in the same category at the 2014 BET Awards. His sophomore album, Rapperholic, was the recipient of 3 Ghana Music Awards from 12 nominations. He was ranked 8th on Forbes and Channel O’s 2013 list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artistes. He is the first Ghanaian to win the BET Awards for “Best International Act Africa”. Sarkodie has had the privilege of performing on the same stage with international musicians such as T-Pain, Miguel, Movado, Trey Songz and Ludacris. He has a large fan base in Africa, and is considered one of the most celebrated musical icons to hail from Ghana.

Yemi Alade, Nigeria

Since the release of her ‘Johnny’ hit, the artiste has never looked back. The remix of her song…in French has continued to receive lots of reviews at home and abroad.

Yemi Alade has just won the award for “Best West African Act” at the 2015 Kunde … for the latest single, “Kissing (French Remix)” which features Afro-Caribbean music star Marvin.

Stonebwoy, Ghana

Stonebwoy is the stage name of Livingstone Etse Satekla, a Ghanaian afro pop, dancehall and reggae artiste and is the CEO of Burniton Music Group. He won the Artiste of the Year in the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Many Ghanaians recognize him as one of the leading reggae and dancehall artistes in the country and Africa. Burniton Music Group dropped a brand new afro-dancehall tune from Stonebwoy. He calls this one Baafira which simply means less talk do more. The song features multi-award winning recording artist, Sarkodie and was produced by Beatz Dakay.

Mafikizolo, South Africa

Mafikizolo, the South African duo are currently “tensioning” the continent with their massive club anthem “Khona”, they also teamed up with Nigeria’s very own Mr May D on their effort Happiness. The South African music group, and Nigeria’s very own Davido teamed up on the track titled “Tchelete”, produced by Shizzi and Oskido. The song is a banger!

Youssou N’dour, Senegal

N’dour helped to develop a style of popular Senegalese music known in the Serer language as mbalax, which derives from the conservative Serer music tradition of “Njuup”. He is the subject of the award-winning films ‘Return to Goree’ directed by Pierre-Yves Borgeaud and ‘Youssou N’dour: I Bring What I Love’ directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, which were released around the world.

In April 2012, it was announced that N’dour has been appointed tourism and culture minister in the cabinet of new Prime Minister Abdoul Mbaye.

J Martins known for his extraordinary skills of blending conscious with beats that make fans nod their heads and tap their feet, released the video to – Time Is Now, featuring the Senegalese international singer –Youssou N’dour.

Wizkid, Nigeria

The album on everyone’s lips right now is “Ayo” by Wizkid, which took the industry by surprise as it dropped ahead of schedule. While it’s still too early to judge the album as a whole, my first impression is very positive. Loads and loads of bangers from start to finish. That said, my 2 stand-out tracks, and possible fan favourites, are “Ojuelegba” and “Kind Love“. Two different kinds of tracks, but you’re guaranteed to love both.
